Unit 13 Release Paths

Central Virginia Correctional Unit No. 13 is operated by the Virginia Department of Corrections. Its location in Chesterfield does not make it part of the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office or the local jail. The county's nonexistent 24-hour and 72-hour release lists would not cover Unit 13. VADOC controls the institution's custody records, computed release date, release documents, and any move into state probation or parole supervision.

A person can leave Unit 13 in several ways. A final discharge ends the applicable VADOC custody or supervision term. Parole is Board-authorized release into supervision for a statutorily eligible person. Probation may follow confinement under a court order. A transfer moves the person to another VADOC placement or custodian and is not community release. Each route requires the state record that names the event, not a guess based on absence from one search result.

The distinction matters. A Board grant authorizes parole but does not prove that the person has completed release processing. A locator disappearance may reflect full discharge, data lifecycle, a spelling problem, or another status. The final artifact closes the gap.

Search Unit 13 Releases

Start with the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. The tool covers people in VADOC institutions, CCAP, local or regional jails under VADOC authority, and probation or parole supervision through district offices. VADOC says the information updates daily and can be inaccurate or out of date. Treat a displayed release date as anticipated until a final event record confirms departure.

1. Accept the locator notice. Read the state's limits before starting the search.
2. Enter a valid search. Use the first three letters of the first name with the complete last name, or enter the seven-digit DOC ID.
3. Narrow the match. Compare age, race, gender, location, and other available identifiers rather than relying on name alone.
4. Read the status and location. Determine whether the person remains at Unit 13, moved to another VADOC location, or appears under supervision.
5. Confirm the event. Obtain the final release document, court record, or Parole Board action that explains the status.

Unit 13 Records Contact

Unit 13 is listed through VADOC's facilities and offices directory. For a present facility question, use the correctional unit's published contact. A release-record request should be narrow and should identify the person, DOC ID when known, and event period. Ask for an existing release date or type, notification-of-release letter, Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, Conditions of Parole, or other releasable release artifact as applicable.

VADOC directs inmate-information requests to the facility unit manager, warden or superintendent, or the probation and parole district chief that maintains the record. Institutional and supervision material can be withheld or redacted, so request the specific existing release field or document needed.

A focused response may produce the requested record, supply a redacted copy, cite a lawful withholding ground, or explain that a different VADOC unit holds it. If the response identifies another custodian, route the same narrow request there instead of asking Chesterfield County to assemble a state-custody history. When only part of a record is protected, ask whether the release date, release type, or final document can be provided as reasonably segregable material.

Unit 13 Release Documents

VADOC's facility-release policy identifies concrete documents used at state release. Depending on status, the person receives or reviews a notification-of-release letter, Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. The applicable paper is read by or to the person and signed in a staff member's presence. These documents distinguish final state action from a date that remained subject to change.

A court disposition can explain the sentence, and a Parole Board report can show official Board action. Neither is the Unit 13 door record. Use the VADOC artifact for the completed release and the other source for its legal basis.

Unit 13 Release Logistics

VADOC says a facility release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. That state policy is not Chesterfield Jail's court-and-bond processing rule. Unit 13 staff also review the applicable release or supervision papers and obtain the required signature. A scheduled date should therefore be used for planning, while the final notice or document confirms the completed event.

State policy addresses practical items at departure. Except in detainer cases, the business office pays the full offender-pay balance and brings it to $25 when the balance is lower. Funds posted too late are forwarded within five business days. Personal property is returned, state clothing is surrendered, discharge clothing may be supplied when needed, and up to a 30-day supply of discharge medication may be provided. The business office can arrange bus transportation.

Those provisions are VADOC rules. They should not be promised in a form the policy does not support, and they do not automatically apply to Chesterfield County Jail. A person should read the actual release papers and follow the reporting instructions stated there.

Unit 13 Release Dates

A locator release date is a computation before the event. VADOC calculates dates based on the sentence type and active term, including jail credit, total sentence, earning class, disciplinary infractions, other sentences, and legal events. Modern felony earned sentence credits do not create one universal percentage. The offense, effective law, credit class, credits earned, and any forfeiture all matter.

Do not recalculate the date from a summary. VADOC time-computation staff hold the state calculation, and the official locator's “release date” should remain described as anticipated until the final notice. Parole eligibility also follows separate statutes and exceptions. A Parole Board decision does not replace VADOC's release processing.

Unit 13 Detainers and Transfers

A detainer is a lawful basis for another authority to seek or continue custody. Its presence can change what happens when a VADOC term or facility placement ends. The state facility-release policy itself distinguishes detainer cases in its departure provisions. A person can leave Unit 13 yet enter another custodian's control, so “released from Unit 13” must not be rewritten as “released to the community.”

Chesterfield has also documented a broader local transfer pathway involving movement to Riverside or another authority, and the county says it cooperates with ICE when assistance is requested. Those facts do not establish that Unit 13 or Chesterfield County has an ICE detention contract. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator only when an immigration handoff is plausible. An empty ICE result remains inconclusive.

Confirm a transfer through VADOC's release or movement record and the receiving system. For federal custody, use the BOP Inmate Locator. For another Virginia facility, return to the VADOC locator after its daily update. A Virginia VINE notice or the separate VADOC NAAVI process can report a change, but the agency record should identify whether it was discharge, supervision, or a handoff.
